The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Ogun State Chapter, has appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to approve and pay outstanding consequential adjustments in pensions, as well as release unpaid gratuities owed to retirees, to cushion the effects of prevailing economic challenges in the country.
The union made the appeal during the 2026 Pensioners’ Day celebration held in Abeokuta, where its Chairman, Comrade Waheed Oloyede, said the payments would provide much-needed relief to senior citizens who had devoted their productive years to the service of the state.
Oloyede particularly appealed to the governor to release outstanding gratuities covering January 2021 to June 2025, noting that the payment would restore hope and improve the welfare of retirees who had waited for their entitlements.
He also called for the approval and implementation of consequential adjustments in pensions arising from the 2019 Federal Government circular on pension adjustments and the recent national minimum wage increase.
According to him, the adjustment remains a significant concern for long-standing pensioners, whose welfare, he said, requires urgent government attention.
“While we rejoice over what you have done, we wish to humbly request that you benevolently approve the release of the remaining gratuities from January 2021 to June 2025 to allow our long-expectant members a ray of hope for a better livelihood,” he said.
The NUP chairman added that the implementation of the consequential adjustments would promote fairness among pensioners and provide some relief amid the prevailing economic difficulties.
“We are passionately appealing and pleading for your kind approval and subsequent payment of the much-expected consequential increases in pensions arising from the approved 2019 Federal Government circular on consequential adjustments of pensions and that of the recent national minimum wage increases,” Oloyede said.
He maintained that the adjustment would enhance the welfare and well-being of senior citizens who had contributed to the development of Ogun State during their years in active service.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Government has disclosed that it has committed a total of ₦157.9 billion to pension-related payments since May 29, 2019, following the release of an additional ₦5.83 billion for gratuities and Additional Pension Benefits.
The Head of Service, Mr Olanrewaju Saka, disclosed this at the 2026 Pensioners’ Day celebration, explaining that the latest disbursement was approved at the September 24, 2026 meeting of the Joint Accounts Allocation Committee (JAAC).
According to Saka, ₦4,906,950,967.98 of the newly released funds would be used to pay gratuities to Local Government pensioners who retired in 2022 and State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) retirees who left service in 2021.
He said the remaining ₦918,596,179.16 had been earmarked for Additional Pension Benefits for eligible retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
The Head of Service further disclosed that the state government had released ₦4.12 billion in Additional Pension Benefits to CPS retirees since the beginning of 2026.
Giving a breakdown of the government’s cumulative pension-related expenditure, Saka said ₦29,116,988,743.64 had been paid as gratuities to 7,390 beneficiaries, while ₦105,391,736,016.69 had been expended on pension payments to 16,420 beneficiaries.
He added that ₦7,782,738,878.42 was committed to CPS deductions for 29,883 beneficiaries between July 2025 and August 2026.
Other expenditures included ₦3,332,112,713.71 for Accrued Pension Rights (APR) to 2,567 beneficiaries, ₦5,041,139,048.90 for arrears of CPS deductions, and ₦1,347,359,839.24 in Returns on Investment (ROI).
Saka also disclosed that ₦584,850,736.98 had been spent on death benefits and other payments for 160 beneficiaries, while ₦1,321,790,502.25 was provided as palliatives.
He noted that Additional Pension Benefits paid to 709 beneficiaries amounted to approximately ₦4 billion during the period under review.
Clarifying the figures, the Head of Service explained that the ₦45.5 billion earlier associated with gratuity payments represented the broader amount committed to Local Government and SUBEB retirees since 2019, while the ₦157.9 billion covered the government’s overall commitment across different pension-related categories.
He said the expenditure reflected the Abiodun administration’s commitment to the welfare of senior citizens and its determination to meet the retirement obligations owed to former public servants.
Saka assured pensioners that the government would continue to honour its commitments and deploy available resources towards addressing outstanding retirement benefits.
