Middle Belt Forum Strongly Opposes Federal Government's Ranching Plan

The Middle Belt Forum has raised concerns over the displacement of communities affected by insecurity, as well as plans to allocate additional land for settlement.

Speaking on Super FM’s current affairs program, Spotlight, spokesperson of the Middle Belt Forum, Luka Biniyat, described the development as a legitimate security concern, particularly in relation to land use as provided for in the Nigerian Constitution.

Mr. Biniyat said not less than two million people from the Middle Belt have been displaced by insecurity, including residents of Southern Borno, Southern Kaduna, Southern Kebbi, Plateau and Benue.

The spokesperson said little attention is being paid to the plight of the displaced, while discussions continue over the acquisition of more land in the name of settling the herders.

He questioned the eventual beneficiaries of such arrangements, expressing concern that people accused of displacing communities should not be given additional land at the expense of indigenes who remain in IDP camps.

Mr. Biniyat also raised concerns about the welfare of internally displaced persons (IDPs), noting that many are still struggling to access basic needs such as decent shelter, healthcare, clean water and education.
