Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has formally endorsed his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, for the 2027 governorship election, signalling an early political alignment ahead of the contest.

The endorsement was announced on Monday at Lagos House, Marina, where the governor publicly backed Hamzat’s ambition, describing him as a capable and experienced leader well-positioned to succeed him.

The move comes amid growing momentum behind Hamzat’s aspiration, following a series of consultative engagements across the state that have attracted support from influential political figures and stakeholders.

Among those who have thrown their weight behind the deputy governor is the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, alongside other prominent figures including the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Senator Tokunbo Abiru, who represents Lagos East; and former Minister of Finance, Wale Edun.

Political analysts say the wave of endorsements reflects a consolidation of backing within key power blocs in Lagos, potentially positioning Hamzat as a leading contender as permutations for the 2027 race begin to take shape.

While neither Sanwo-Olu nor Hamzat outlined specific campaign strategies, indications suggest that consultations and alliance-building efforts will intensify in the months ahead as political actors begin early positioning for the governorship contest.
