NIS Seeks Partnership with NELFUND to Boost Sports Education, Workforce Development

The National Institute for Sports (NIS) is positioning itself for a strategic reset, with a proposed partnership with the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) aimed at unlocking access to funding for aspiring sports professionals and accelerating workforce development in the sector.

Director-General of NIS, Comrade Philip Shaibu, made the case during a visit to NELFUND’s office, framing the collaboration as a critical enabler for building a sustainable pipeline of coaches, administrators, and sports technicians across Nigeria.

Shaibu highlighted that while the institute has begun a revival process after years of decline, financial barriers remain a major constraint for students seeking training. He noted that although the institute has introduced flexible payment options, a structured financing model through NELFUND would provide a more scalable and sustainable solution.

The move aligns with NIS’s broader transformation agenda, anchored on a 10-year strategic plan designed to reposition the institute as a hub for sports excellence in Nigeria and across Africa. The plan, developed through multi-stakeholder engagement and refined by a 32-member committee, outlines a roadmap for institutional growth, modernization, and expanded national reach.

As part of early wins, Shaibu pointed to the decentralization of NIS operations across the six geopolitical zones and renewed partnerships with state governments and private sector players—signals of a shift toward a more inclusive and accessible sports education framework.

He also emphasized a renewed focus on grassroots sports development, describing it as central to both talent discovery and youth engagement. According to him, leveraging sports as a tool for social intervention can help address unemployment and social vices by equipping young people with practical skills.

Responding, NELFUND Managing Director, Mr. Akintunde Oluwale Sawyerr, expressed confidence in Shaibu’s leadership and affirmed the fund’s readiness to support the initiative. He noted that expanding educational financing into sports aligns with NELFUND’s broader mandate of empowering Nigerian youths across critical sectors.

Both institutions signaled strong alignment on the next steps, with expectations that the partnership will unlock new opportunities for students, strengthen capacity within the sports ecosystem, and contribute to long-term national development objectives.
