Leaders and stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun East Senatorial District have closed ranks in a decisive political move, unanimously endorsing Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, as their consensus candidate for the 2027 Senate election.
The endorsement, which signals early political alignment ahead of the next electoral cycle, was announced on Monday at a high-powered stakeholders’ meeting held at Adeola Odutola Hall in Ijebu-Ode. The gathering attracted a formidable cross-section of the party’s structure, reflecting deep-rooted support that cuts across all tiers of leadership and grassroots mobilization.
In what can be described as a full-spectrum show of unity, the event had in attendance members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), serving and former lawmakers at both state and federal levels, all 103 councillors across the nine local governments in Ogun East, ward executives, local government chairmen, youth and women leaders, as well as members of the Elders Advisory Council.
Setting the tone for the endorsement, former Ogun East Senator, Lekan Mustapha, who spoke on behalf of stakeholders, said the decision was anchored on a shared conviction in Governor Abiodun’s leadership capacity, governance record, and ability to effectively represent the district at the national level. He further disclosed that arrangements were underway to formally communicate the decision to the governor, including the purchase of his nomination forms.
“This is not just an endorsement; it is a strategic consensus. We will constitute a delegation to formally present this resolution to the governor, affirming that he has been adopted as our candidate,” Mustapha stated.
Reinforcing this position, Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, described the endorsement as both historic and unanimous, noting that it reflects the collective confidence of Ogun East stakeholders in Abiodun’s leadership and political capital.
Also lending weight to the development, Hon. Femi Ogunbanwo, representing Odogbolu, Ijebu-Ode, and Ijebu North East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, highlighted the governor’s achievements in fostering peace, stability, and infrastructural development across the state. He expressed optimism that Abiodun’s transition to the Senate would translate into increased federal presence and benefits for Ogun East.
At the grassroots level, Chairman of Sagamu Local Government, Hon. Afolabi Odulate, echoed the district’s collective appeal, urging the governor to accept the senatorial call as a continuation of his developmental agenda.
The meeting also showcased the depth of political buy-in, with prominent figures such as former senators Gbenga Kaka and Lekan Mustapha, Ogun East APC Chairman Adedoyin Adeleke, and respected party elders including Kola Ogunjobi, Bayo Dayo, and others in attendance.
Members of the House of Representatives from the district — Adesola Elegbeji, Joseph Adegbesan, and Femi Ogunbanwo — were also present, underscoring institutional backing for the endorsement.
From a strategic standpoint, the unanimous adoption of Governor Abiodun positions the APC in Ogun East as a highly coordinated political bloc, potentially reducing internal contestation ahead of the primaries while consolidating electoral strength for the 2027 general election.
With this development, the momentum around Abiodun’s anticipated Senate bid appears firmly established, setting the stage for what could be a largely uncontested path to the APC ticket in Ogun East.
