FG Pushes Power Sector Upgrade, Targets 480MW Boost from Abeokuta Substation

The Federal Government has intensified efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s power infrastructure, with a new substation project in Abeokuta positioned as a key milestone in improving electricity supply and grid stability.

Speaking during an inspection of the facility, the Managing Director of the FGN Power Company, Kenny Anuwe, said the project reflects the administration’s commitment to tackling longstanding challenges in the electricity sector through targeted investments and infrastructure upgrades.

The initiative forms part of the broader Presidential Power Initiative under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritizes reliable power supply as a critical driver of economic growth.

At the center of the intervention is a €161 million contract awarded to Siemens Energy for the upgrade of five brownfield substations across the country, including the Abeokuta facility.

The new substation, located in the Toolu area of Abeokuta, is expected to deliver an additional 480 megawatts to the national grid upon completion, a development projected to significantly improve electricity supply across Ogun State and surrounding regions.

According to Anuwe, the project is not just an expansion but a modernization effort aimed at upgrading ageing infrastructure and increasing transmission capacity to meet growing demand.

He disclosed that the FGN Power Company has already added over 1,000 megawatts to the grid through the deployment of mobile substations and transformers under the Siemens-backed programme, signaling incremental progress in addressing capacity constraints.

Technical details of the project indicate a transition from the existing 132kV infrastructure to a more robust 330kV capacity, a move expected to reduce dependence on external supply sources such as Ikeja West and mitigate the impact of load shedding.

Industry experts note that the Abeokuta substation is strategically important, given Ogun State’s growing industrial base and increasing energy demand from businesses and commercial activities.

Project timelines suggest civil works will be completed by mid-2026, with full commissioning targeted for December, aligning with the government’s push to deliver tangible improvements in electricity supply within the current cycle.

Officials from Siemens Energy have confirmed that construction remains on schedule, reinforcing confidence in the project’s delivery timeline.

Beyond Abeokuta, the broader upgrade programme spans key locations including Ayede, Offa, Onitsha, and Sokoto, indicating a nationwide approach to strengthening transmission infrastructure.

For stakeholders, the focus now shifts to execution—ensuring that timelines are met and that the projected gains in capacity translate into real improvements in power supply for households and industries.

The government’s message is clear: infrastructure-led intervention is the chosen path to stabilizing Nigeria’s power sector. The real test, however, will be whether these projects deliver consistent electricity where it matters most—on the grid and in everyday use.
