Olubadan Launches “Ibadan Guards” to Tackle Insecurity, Rolls Out Food Support Initiative

In a decisive grassroots response to rising security concerns, the Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja has unveiled a community-driven security outfit, “Ibadan Guards,” aimed at strengthening safety across Ibadan.

The initiative, launched at the monarch’s palace in Oke Aremo, marks a strategic shift toward localized security architecture, with operatives set to be deployed across all eleven local government areas in Ibadanland. The move reflects growing recognition that community-level interventions are critical in addressing evolving security challenges.

Positioned as a complementary force, the Ibadan Guards are expected to collaborate closely with formal security agencies, enhancing intelligence gathering and rapid response at the grassroots. The approach aligns with a broader national trend where traditional institutions are increasingly stepping in to fill security gaps through localized solutions.

Alongside the security initiative, the Olubadan also introduced “Gaari Ibadan,” a food support programme designed to cushion economic hardship among residents. The dual rollout signals a holistic strategy—tackling both safety and socio-economic pressures as interconnected drivers of stability.

Observers note that the intervention underscores the expanding role of traditional leadership in governance and community development. By combining security reinforcement with welfare support, the Olubadan’s approach positions Ibadanland for a more resilient and community-centered model of development.

With implementation set to span all local councils, the success of the Ibadan Guards will likely depend on effective coordination with security agencies, sustained funding, and community trust—key pillars that will determine whether the initiative delivers measurable impact in curbing crime and improving public safety.
