A significant political shift has emerged in northern Nigeria as former Kano State governor and ex-senator, Kabiru Gaya, formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), signaling potential realignments ahead of future political contests.
In a resignation letter dated April 5, 2026, and addressed to the APC ward chairman in Gaya Local Government Area of Kano State, Gaya announced his decision to exit the party, emphasizing that the move was driven by the best interests of his constituents and his personal convictions.
Gaya, who represented Kano South in the Senate from 2015 to 2023, described his time within the APC as an honour, expressing appreciation for the platform and opportunities the party afforded him throughout his political career. However, he noted that after “careful reflection and wide consultation,” he resolved to step away from the ruling party.
While the former governor did not immediately disclose his next political move, his resignation adds to a growing trend of high-profile defections and internal shifts within major political parties in Nigeria. Analysts suggest that such developments could reshape political dynamics in Kano and beyond, particularly as stakeholders begin early positioning ahead of future elections.
The development is expected to trigger reactions within APC ranks in Kano, a key political stronghold, and may open the door for new alliances or recalibrations among influential political figures in the state.
