The Nigeria Police Force in Kogi State has launched a full-scale investigation into the killing of a fresh graduate of University of Maiduguri, Aminu Lawal, following rising public concern over alleged attempts to compromise the case.

Lawal, who had recently completed his studies and was awaiting mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps, was reported missing on March 18 after leaving his home in Lokoja to work with his tricycle, popularly known as Keke NAPEP. His disappearance triggered a search by family members, which ended in tragedy the next day when his lifeless body was discovered in a bush path near the Central Bank area in Zone 8.

Eyewitness accounts described a brutal killing, with signs suggesting he was attacked with a heavy object and further assaulted, heightening fears about growing insecurity in the state capital.

Confirming developments, Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, dismissed claims that law enforcement authorities were under pressure to release a suspect already linked to the case. She maintained that investigations were ongoing and assured that the command would pursue the matter to its logical conclusion.

“It’s not true that the police is under pressure to release the suspect. We are still investigating the case,” she stated.

The case has, however, taken a complex turn following a parallel community-led inquiry that reportedly implicated an acquaintance of the deceased, identified as Garuba, said to be among the last people to contact Lawal before his disappearance. The suspect was subsequently arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department.

Despite the arrest, concerns persist within the community, with sources alleging behind-the-scenes efforts to influence the investigation and secure the suspect’s release—claims that authorities have strongly denied.

For many observers, the incident underscores a recurring challenge: public trust in the justice system, particularly in high-profile or emotionally charged cases. The demand from residents is clear—transparency, accountability, and swift justice.

Beyond the immediate tragedy, Lawal’s story has struck a deeper chord. Having navigated the security challenges in the North-East to complete his education, his killing upon returning home has amplified calls for improved safety and stronger law enforcement outcomes.

As investigations continue, the case is fast becoming a litmus test for the credibility of the state’s criminal justice process—and whether justice will not only be done but be seen to be done.
