Fresh Killings Rock Plateau 24 Hours After Tinubu’s Visit, Raise Fresh Security Concerns

Barely 24 hours after Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited Jos to reassure residents following recent violence, fresh attacks in parts of Plateau State have reignited fears over the region’s fragile security situation.

In the early hours of Friday, suspected terrorists reportedly launched an assault on Jol community in Riyom Local Government Area, killing 51-year-old Dalyop Betobeje. The attack, said to have originated from the Rankum (Mahanga) axis, occurred around 6:56 a.m., with local leaders describing it as a direct affront to ongoing peace and reconciliation efforts.

The incident came on the heels of another deadly attack in Heipang District, Bassa Local Government Area, where gunmen suspected to be herders stormed Ban village on Wednesday night. The attack left a secondary school student, Gloria Godwin, dead, several others injured, and properties destroyed.

The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) strongly condemned the attacks, describing them as “brutal and senseless,” and called on security agencies to intensify efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice. Chairman of BYM Heipang District, Jacob Pam Chall, emphasized the need for sustained security operations and thorough investigations.

Security agencies have confirmed that investigations are underway, with efforts ongoing to track those responsible for the attacks.

The renewed violence has cast doubt on recent assurances by President Tinubu, who during his visit pledged the Federal Government’s commitment to ending the cycle of bloodshed in the state.

With back-to-back attacks in Riyom and Bassa, residents and stakeholders are now calling for more decisive and sustained security interventions, warning that without urgent action, rural communities in Plateau may continue to face persistent threats despite high-level assurances.
