Political agitation ahead of the 2027 elections is gaining traction in Badagry Division, as a prominent elder, Andu Liadi Adio, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to honour longstanding assurances that the area will one day produce the Governor of Lagos State.
Speaking at his residence, the 93-year-old statesman expressed optimism that the President would support the aspiration, describing it as a matter of equity for a region he said has remained politically marginalized since the state’s creation.
Adio recalled that during Tinubu’s tenure as governor, Badagry was given representation through the appointment of Olanrewaju Saka Shenayon as Commissioner for Rural Development and Infrastructure, arguing that the move demonstrated the division’s capacity to produce competent leaders.
Backing the agitation, Shenayon dismissed concerns over the candidacy of Samuel Mawuyon Ajose, popularly known as “SMA Gold,” describing him as a seasoned professional with significant contributions to Lagos West and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Similarly, former House of Representatives member Rafeequat Arinola Onabamiro argued that Ajose’s extensive private sector experience positions him well for leadership, drawing parallels with past governors such as Babatunde Fashola and Akinwunmi Ambode, who also transitioned from non-political careers to public office.
However, she raised concerns over what she described as decades of political exclusion, noting that since 1967, Badagry Division has yet to produce a military governor, deputy governor, minister, or secretary to the state government.
With growing unity across Lagos West Senatorial District, stakeholders say the push for Ajose’s candidacy reflects a broader demand for inclusion and power rotation—factors that could significantly shape the political equation in Lagos ahead of 2027.
