Momentum Builds for Iyabo Obasanjo as Ogun Eyes First Female Governor in 2027

A growing political wave is positioning Iyabo Obasanjo at the centre of a potentially historic shift in Ogun State, as stakeholders across the state rally behind the prospect of electing its first female governor in 2027.

The emerging momentum, highlighted in a widely circulated opinion by public affairs commentator Adewale Ademide, reflects what observers describe as a strategic convergence of grassroots support, elite alignment, and rising advocacy for gender inclusion in governance.

Ademide framed the development within Ogun’s long-standing tradition of progressive leadership across its major blocs—Egba, Ijebu, Yewa, and Awori—arguing that the state is once again on the brink of making history.

According to him, Obasanjo’s growing support base signals more than a personal political ambition, but rather a broader movement anchored on inclusivity, reform, and a shift toward modern governance values.

“The organic growth of her support base across all regions underscores the readiness of the people to embrace a new narrative,” he noted, pointing to increasing political alignment across diverse interest groups.

The push also aligns with a broader national conversation around women’s political participation, championed by figures such as Oluremi Tinubu, who has consistently advocated greater female representation in leadership.

While political analysts acknowledge that the race remains open and competitive, they note that the early consolidation of support around Obasanjo places her in a strong strategic position ahead of the 2027 elections.

With momentum building and conversations shifting, Ogun State appears to be entering a new political phase—one where legacy, inclusion, and evolving voter expectations could redefine its leadership trajectory.
