APC Hit in Kano as Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna Resigns, Meets Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano has suffered a significant political setback following the resignation of its 2023 governorship candidate, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, in a move that is already reshaping the state’s political landscape ahead of upcoming elections.

Gawuna, a former Deputy Governor of the state, formally announced his exit from the ruling party in a letter dated March 29, 2026, addressed to the APC chairman in his Gawuna Ward, Nasarawa Local Government Area. He described the decision as personal and the outcome of careful reflection, while appreciating the party for the opportunities it afforded him.

However, the political undertone of his resignation quickly gained traction after he paid a visit to former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his residence on Miller Road. The meeting, later confirmed by Kwankwaso on social media, has fueled speculation of an impending political realignment.

Kwankwaso, a dominant force in Kano politics, hinted at unfolding developments, signaling that Gawuna’s move may not be an isolated decision but part of broader strategic consultations capable of redefining alliances in the state.

Gawuna’s exit comes at a critical time when political activities are intensifying, with stakeholders positioning ahead of the next electoral cycle. Having served under former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Gawuna remains a key political figure, particularly in Nasarawa Local Government Area where his influence is deeply rooted.

Analysts believe his departure could weaken the APC’s grassroots structure in parts of Kano, while potentially strengthening opposition blocs depending on his next move. Although he has yet to declare a new political affiliation, the optics of his engagement with Kwankwaso suggest a possible alignment that could alter the balance of power in the state.

As momentum builds, Gawuna’s next step will be closely watched, with implications that could extend beyond Kano and into the broader national political equation.
