The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, David Mark, has declared the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as a growing threat to Nigeria’s multiparty democracy, warning of an emerging drift toward a one-party system.
Mark made the remarks in Kano during the formal reception of former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, into the ADC following his defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Framing the defection as more than routine political realignment, Mark described Kwankwaso’s move as a “defining moment” and a strategic consolidation of opposition forces aimed at safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic structure. According to him, the move reflects a broader call for unity among opposition leaders to resist what he termed a gradual erosion of democratic space.
“There is no doubt that the ruling party represents the most dangerous threat to multiparty democracy in Nigeria today,” Mark stated, alleging attempts to weaken opposition voices and concentrate political power. He warned that such trends could edge the country toward totalitarianism if left unchecked.
The event drew prominent political figures across party lines, including Peter Obi, John Odigie-Oyegun, Aminu Tambuwal, and Rauf Aregbesola, signaling a potential coalition-building effort ahead of future electoral cycles.
Mark emphasized that the ADC aims to reposition itself as a platform for inclusive governance, urging Nigerians across ethnic, religious, and political divides to rally behind a collective vision for a more accountable and participatory system.
Kwankwaso’s entry into the ADC is widely seen as a significant political development, particularly in northern Nigeria, where his influence remains substantial. Analysts suggest the move could reshape opposition dynamics and intensify competition in the country’s evolving political landscape.
With calls for a united front growing louder, the ADC leadership appears to be setting the stage for a broader coalition strategy—one that could redefine Nigeria’s opposition politics and test the dominance of the ruling APC in the lead-up to future elections.
