PDP Faction Rejects Tinubu Endorsement, Pushes Unity Ahead of Convention

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Tanimu Turaki has firmly ruled out any possibility of endorsing President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing such a move as “immoral, unjust, and unfair.”

The position was articulated by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, during a television interview on Thursday, where he stressed that it would be improper for a major opposition party to back a sitting president from a rival platform.

“It is improper, immoral, and unjust for an opposition party of this standing to endorse the presidential candidature of Bola Tinubu of the APC,” Ememobong stated, reinforcing the bloc’s commitment to maintaining a clear opposition stance.

Despite internal divisions within the party, Ememobong expressed optimism that ongoing reconciliation efforts would be guided by logic and strategic interest rather than sentiment. He noted that the Turaki-led faction remains committed to ensuring that any peace process strengthens—not weakens—the PDP’s role as a viable opposition force.

The party’s internal crisis, which has seen rival factions emerge, appears to be easing as reconciliation talks between the Turaki bloc and the camp aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, gain momentum ahead of the party’s national convention scheduled for March 29–30, 2026.

Speaking in Abuja, Turaki confirmed that fresh talks had commenced and were already yielding positive outcomes. He emphasised the urgency of resolving the dispute, particularly in view of timelines set by Nigeria’s Electoral Act, and called on stakeholders to prioritise the broader interest of the party.

Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, expressed confidence that all lingering issues—including those involving the Wike-led faction—could be resolved through dialogue and compromise.

“We are willing to bend as far as necessary. We are ready to make sacrifices in the overall interest of the party. PDP will not die,” he said, signaling a pragmatic approach to the reconciliation process.

He further revealed that contentious issues such as participation in the upcoming convention and related procedural concerns remain under discussion, with final decisions to be taken collectively by party delegates.

Political observers say the outcome of the reconciliation efforts could significantly shape the PDP’s preparedness and positioning as a competitive opposition force heading into the 2027 elections.
