2027: Ogun Central, West Qualified to Produce Next Governor — Afuape

The lawmaker representing Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, Moruf Afuape, has stated that both Ogun Central and Ogun West Senatorial Districts are well qualified to produce the next governor of Ogun State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Afuape made this known during a media chat held on Tuesday at the Nigeria Union of Journalists secretariat in Abeokuta, where he called for unity, fairness, and inclusiveness in the state’s political process.

According to the lawmaker, with the incumbent governor emerging from Ogun East, it would be equitable for either Ogun Central or Ogun West to produce the next governor, in line with the principles of balance and fairness.

However, he cautioned against attempts by certain groups to exclusively zone the governorship to a particular district, warning that such moves could create unnecessary tension and division within the state.

Afuape stressed that Ogun State’s political future should be driven by competence, capacity, and the collective interest of the people, rather than narrow sectional considerations.

“We must not allow zoning debates to divide us. What should matter most is competence, capacity, and the ability to move Ogun State forward—not where a candidate comes from,” he said.

He further urged political leaders and stakeholders to exercise restraint and guide their supporters responsibly, noting that inflammatory statements and actions could overheat the polity ahead of the elections.

While acknowledging zoning as a useful mechanism for political balance, Afuape called for a mature and measured approach to the 2027 governorship race, anchored on unity and shared progress.

Highlighting his legislative achievements, the lawmaker noted that beyond sponsoring motions aimed at improving citizens’ welfare, he has facilitated key developmental projects, including road reconstruction, transformer donations, and classroom construction within his constituency.

He also assured constituents that ongoing and previously abandoned projects would be completed, reaffirming his commitment to sustainable development and service delivery.
