Former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo on Tuesday visited the Awujale Palace in Ijebu Ode, where she held a closed-door meeting with traditional rulers across Ijebuland as part of consultations for her governorship ambition in Ogun State.
The high-level meeting, convened under the Ijebu Traditional Council, was chaired by the Orimolusi of Ijebu-Igbo, Oba Lawrence Jaiyeola Adebajo, and brought together several prominent monarchs from the region.
Among those in attendance were Oba Abdul-Razaq Adenugba, Oba Sikiru Afuape Okuribido, Oba Abdul-Ganiyu Olusegun Aokoya-Yesufu, Oba Mufutau Adesanya Kasali, Oba Michael Olusegun Adesina, Oba Abdulmojeed Adetoye Alatishe, and Oba Adebayo Johnson Okubena.
Although details of the deliberations were not made public, Obasanjo, who spoke with journalists after the meeting, said her visit was to formally inform the royal fathers of her intention to contest the governorship seat and to seek their support.
“I am here to consult with the royal fathers on my candidacy, to let them know that I am running for the position of Governor of Ogun State in the coming election. I am interested in partnership with Ijebuland to achieve this and make promises that I will keep on my ascension to the governorship,” she stated.
When pressed to disclose specifics of her commitments, the former lawmaker declined, citing strategic considerations.
“The promises are confidential because there are others in the race who may not share the same ideas. If released prematurely, they may adopt them. But I am a politician; I say what I mean and mean what I say. I know where I am going with my campaign and how to improve Ijebuland and every part of Ogun State,” she added.
Obasanjo also reaffirmed her support for the second-term vision of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aligning her governorship ambition with the broader national agenda.
The consultation is seen as part of ongoing political engagements ahead of the Ogun State governorship race, with traditional institutions continuing to play a significant advisory role in the region’s political landscape.
