The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Kabiru Turaki, is in Abuja for a strategic meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan, signaling ongoing efforts to navigate internal party tensions and chart the party’s path forward.
The meeting is taking place at Jonathan’s Maitama office in the nation’s capital. While the agenda was not officially disclosed, sources told TheCable that discussions are likely focused on leadership consolidation within the opposition party and the broader political landscape in the country.
This development comes amid ongoing factional disputes in the PDP. In November, a faction supported by several PDP governors—including Bauchi’s Bala Mohammed and Oyo’s Seyi Makinde—held a convention that elected new NWC members with Kabiru Turaki as chairman. During that convention, the faction expelled key figures aligned with former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, including Ayodele Fayose, Samuel Anyanwu, Kamaldeen Ajibade, and other prominent leaders.
The Wike faction rejected the expulsions, establishing a parallel NWC, Board of Trustees (BoT), and National Executive Council (NEC) in response. In turn, the Turaki-aligned faction also issued reciprocal expulsions, deepening the internal divide.
The current meeting with Jonathan is widely viewed as an attempt by the Turaki-led NWC to seek guidance from the former president, who has historically played a unifying role in the PDP, and to consolidate support for the faction recognized by the governors.
Observers note that the outcome of the meeting could have implications for party cohesion, upcoming elections, and negotiations between the rival factions. The PDP remains under scrutiny as stakeholders await a possible roadmap for reconciliation or strategic alignment ahead of the 2026 electoral cycle.
