Tinubu Receives Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward

President Bola Tinubu on Monday hosted the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, at the State House, Abuja, during the royal’s working visit to Nigeria.

The President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, announced the meeting in a post on X.

Prince Edward is in Nigeria to lead a series of engagements in Lagos from 17–23 November 2025 aimed at promoting the global expansion of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.

The week-long programme will bring together nearly 200 young people from more than 50 countries, along with hundreds of award leaders, policymakers, and representatives of youth-focused organisations worldwide.

Participants will take part in a three-day intensive youth leadership programme, followed by the International Award’s triennial Forum, which will focus on expanding access to the scheme globally.

Nearly 1.2 million young people across over 130 countries participated in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award last year. While the United Kingdom accounts for about half of the global participants, Kenya has the second-highest enrolment. Nigeria—host of this year’s events—has recorded a 37 per cent rise in participation, highlighting growing interest in the scheme across West Africa.
