Obi Condemns Anambra Tragedy, Calls for Immediate Investigation into Security-Backed Killings

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the recent killings of traders—including a pregnant woman—by a state-backed security outfit in Onitsha, Anambra State.

In a statement, Obi described the incident as “deeply troubling” and emphasized the urgent need for thorough investigation, restructuring, and accountability of security agencies operating within the state.

He pointed out that the incident underscores the critical necessity for effective oversight of state-supported security groups, which have increasingly become sources of fear rather than protection for ordinary citizens. Obi called for rigorous vetting, training, and monitoring of such outfits to ensure professionalism and prevent abuse.

On his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, in a post titled “Curbing the Excesses of State Actors,” Obi demanded a full investigation into the tragedy and appropriate sanctions for those responsible.

“Amidst our nation’s ongoing security challenges and efforts to establish effective policing, it is disheartening that some state-backed security groups, created to enhance safety, have instead worsened the plight of our citizens—sometimes acting more violently than the criminals they are meant to combat,” Obi stated.

“The tragic killing of traders, especially the pregnant woman in Onitsha, highlights the urgent need for scrutiny and restructuring of these outfits to prevent future abuses. Previously, the Udo Ga-Achi Security Outfit in Anambra was involved in brutal assaults on citizens, and now, another group is responsible for unwarranted violence and loss of innocent lives.”

He further noted, “The security situation in Anambra appears to be deteriorating. This incident warrants a thorough investigation, and all culprits must be brought to justice. We must ensure that security outfits are properly vetted and operate within the bounds of the law. Without proper oversight, these groups risk becoming a threat to the very people they are supposed to protect.”

Obi extended his deepest sympathies to the families affected, praying they find strength and comfort in this difficult time. “May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” he concluded.
