Nigerian Man Living in UK Faces Extradition After Hacking US University and Stealing $235,000

Farouk Adekunle Adepoju, a Nigerian national residing in the United Kingdom, has been arrested following a U.S. extradition request on charges of wire fraud and computer fraud, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Troy Rivetti. Adepoju was detained by UK authorities on September 15, 2025, and is currently awaiting extradition to face a seven-count indictment in the Western District of Pennsylvania.

According to the unsealed indictment, between March and April 2023, Adepoju allegedly hacked into a computer system of a Western Pennsylvania construction company contracted by a university. He manipulated email settings, created a spoofed email account, and deceived the university into transferring approximately $235,266.80 to a fraudulent bank account. The stolen funds have not been recovered.

“Adepoju is charged with using sophisticated cyber tactics to illegally access a business’s accounts and target one of our region’s universities,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Rivetti in a statement. “Despite being halfway across the world, Adepoju was not beyond the reach of the FBI’s investigative efforts.”

FBI Pittsburgh Special Agent in Charge Kevin Rojek emphasized, “Criminals attempting to steal from the United States remotely should know: the FBI and our partners will pursue you relentlessly.”

Adepoju faces six counts of wire fraud and one count of computer fraud, which together could result in a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison.
