Nigeria’s sprint queen, Tobi Amusan, proved once again that she belongs among the world’s elite hurdlers as she stormed to a silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, clocking 12.29 seconds.
Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji stunned the field to snatch gold in a national record time of 12.24s, while American Grace Stark settled for bronze in 12.34s. Masai Russell (USA) narrowly missed the podium after clipping hurdles and finishing fourth in 12.44s.
Amusan’s performance didn’t just deliver another global medal for Nigeria — it also came with a major financial reward. Her runner-up finish earned her $35,000 in World Athletics prize money, and an additional $20,000 silver-medallist bonus from Nigeria’s kit sponsor, HiRacer, bringing her total haul to $55,000 (₦82.5m).
Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) President, Tonobok Okowa, confirmed HiRacer’s podium incentive, urging Nigerian athletes to “concentrate, work hard and try to win, and then they will win their money.”
This silver marks Nigeria’s 12th medal in World Championships history and reinforces Amusan’s status as a national icon. The 28-year-old had earlier breezed through the semi-finals in 12.36s to set up a thrilling final, but could not match Kambundji’s late surge in what was one of the most competitive hurdles finals in recent memory.
Amusan, who famously won gold with a world-record 12.12s run in Eugene 2022, once again demonstrated her consistency at the highest level, keeping Nigeria firmly on the global athletics map.
