Ogun Assembly Elevates Principal Generals to Permanent Secretary Status, Teachers Hail Law

Teachers across Ogun State have commended the Minority Leader of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Lukman Adeleye, for sponsoring the landmark bill that elevates the office of the Principal General (PG) to the status of Permanent Secretary in the state’s education system.

The bill, which sought the gazetting of the Principal General’s office, was recently passed by the State House of Assembly and signed into law by Governor Dapo Abiodun, CON.

With the new law, a successor must now be appointed immediately whenever a Principal General retires, ensuring continuity of leadership and sustaining the prestige of the position for secondary school teachers.

In a letter of appreciation, the State Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Mr. Felix Oluwaseun Agbesanwa, praised Hon. Adeleye’s “vision and courage” for initiating the legislative process.

“This bill represents a restoration of the dignity of teachers and a major win for the profession in Ogun State,” Agbesanwa said. “We thank Hon. Lukman Adeleye for standing boldly for truth, equity, and justice. His effort has brought lasting honour to teachers in the state.”

He also commended Speaker Rt. Hon. Olumide Elemide, other lawmakers, and the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, for their roles in ensuring the bill’s passage, while expressing gratitude to Governor Abiodun for assenting to it.

The legislation, widely described as a “gift to teachers” ahead of the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration, follows other interventions by Governor Abiodun, including the provision of new vehicles to Principal Generals in 2023.

Retired PGs under the leadership of Alhaji Olubajo, along with the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), were also lauded for their contributions to the law’s successful enactment.

Teachers across the state have welcomed the development with excitement, saying it will boost morale and further strengthen Ogun’s secondary education system.
