– Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has announced that the Federal Government has formally approved the establishment of a division of the Court of Appeal in Abeokuta, the state capital.
The governor made the announcement during a special thanksgiving service to mark the opening of the 2025/2026 legal year, held at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Ake, Abeokuta.
Abiodun described the approval as a “landmark achievement” for the state, noting that the new appellate division would bring justice closer to the people, ensure faster dispensation of cases, and ease the heavy caseload on the Ibadan Division.
“We have finally received the formal approval for the establishment of the Ogun State division of the Federal Court of Appeal in Abeokuta,” he said. “Our administration proudly championed this initiative to make justice more accessible to our people.”
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the judiciary with resources, housing, and welfare for judges and staff who will serve at the new division.
He also commended the Ogun State judiciary for maintaining its independence, reducing case backlogs, and embracing reforms.
In his sermon, Bishop of Ijebuland South/West Diocese, Rt. Rev’d Babatunde Ogunbanwo, described the judiciary as the most powerful arm of government, capable of “enthroning and dethroning kings.”
He urged judicial officers to act with fairness, integrity, and compassion, stressing that “justice without mercy can be cruel.”
The Chief Judge of Ogun State, Hon. Justice Mosumola Dipeolu, led the Bible reading from Colossians 3:8-17.
