Support Military To End Illegal Refineries, Minister Urges Niger Deltans

The Minister of Defence, MOHAMMED ABUBAKAR, has called on Niger Delta communities to provide crucial intelligence to aid the military’s efforts in dismantling illegal refineries.

The Minister made the call while speaking to journalists during an operational visit to the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army on Friday.

He stressed that local cooperation is vital to shutting down illegal operations and boosting Nigeria’s oil production, which currently stands at 1.6 million barrels per day.

Abubakar highlighted the need for local residents to assist the military by sharing intelligence on illegal refineries, as this is essential to restoring oil production to 2.5 million barrels per day.

Since February, troops of the 103 Battalion have successfully dismantled 67 illegal refineries in the challenging terrains of Rivers State, the minister revealed, commending their efforts during the tour.

In recognition of his leadership, the Defence Minister was presented with a gift during a stopover at Elem Kalabari Road by the commander of the 103 Battalion.

It was Day 3 of Abubakar’s visit to areas under the 6 Division, with an inspection of military operations in the swampy Buguma Creek, Rivers State.

The Defence Minister, fully kitted for the terrain, was joined by the General Officer Commanding the 6 Division and other senior officers as they oversaw the dismantling of an illegal refinery.

The minister’s visit aimed to assess ongoing operations and address challenges, with a focus on supporting the military’s fight against oil theft in the region.
