Senate Gives INEC Sole Power On Transmission Of Election Results

The Senate has amended the Electoral Act to give the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) the sole power to determine the mode of transmission of electoral results.

The senators during plenary amended the Clause 52 of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, and resolved that voting at an election and transmission of results shall be in accordance with the procedure determined by the Commission.

This followed the reversal of the Senate’s earlier decision that INEC may only consider the electronic transmission of results provided that national network coverage is adjudged to be adequate and secure by the Nigerian Communications Commission and approved by the National Assembly.

With the new development, the way is now clear for INEC to commence electronic transmission of election results, and also to consider electronic voting.
