The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, had reiterated that it would declare a nationwide strike anytime soon following the federal government’s refusal to meet its demands despite consistent appeals.
While addressing newsmen during a conference at the University of Lagos, the coordinator of the Lagos zone of the union, Professor ADELAJA ODUKOYA, said the union is losing patience over government’s insensitivity to the plight of its members and that of the public universities.
ODUKOYA said the only saving grace that could stop them from embarking on the proposed industrial action is for the federal government to do the needful fast.
He said ASUU had urged the federal government to recall them about a year ago to complete their tenures in line with the University Act upon which they were constituted, adding that the union would not relent in its struggles for better public university education and the country.
Members of the University of Jos Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has organised a peaceful protest over the non-implementation of agreement it reached with the Federal Government.
Chairperson of the union in the University of Jos, Professor JURBE MOLWUS, led the protest on yesterday.
The protest, which started from the union’s secretariat, saw the vice chairman of the branch, MUHAMMAD INTI, leading other placards-carrying union members, matching through the school’s premises while stating their demands.
While speaking during the protest, INTI also urged the Federal Government to provide adequate funding for public universities, and to revert the illegal dissolution of public universities governing councils.
The peaceful protest is in line with the 14-day ultimatum issued by NEC, calling on the Federal Government to honour the agreement reached with it a long time ago.
According to the union, the protest is an attempt to avert another strike, adding that they want the government to meet their renegotiated demands.
He union added that it was hopeful that the protest would compel the government to address their concerns and prevent another round of strikes.
