Indonesia will ban all air and sea travel until June in an apparent effort to contain the spread of the corona virus during the holiest period on the Islamic calendar. 

The temporary ban takes effect today, the first day of the fasting month of Ramadan for the Muslim-majority country, and lasts until June 1.

It comes a day after the government banned the annual exodus for Eid el-Fitr, the holiday marking the end of Ramadan, when millions travel to their hometowns and ancestral villages.

Government officials say the latest measure will not apply to emergency, diplomatic or cargo transport.
