The sporting community in Nigeria is mourning the loss of Coach Adegboye Onigbinde, the first indigenous coach of the Super Eagles, who passed on recently.

A statement from the National Institute for Sports expressed both gratitude and sorrow, describing Onigbinde as a “pillar in the foundation of Nigerian football” and a legend whose discipline, courage, and football intelligence left an indelible mark on the game in Nigeria.

The institute recalled a February 9, 2026 courtesy visit to Onigbinde’s residence in Modakeke, Osun State, during which the tactician’s contributions and legacy were highlighted. Officials stressed the importance of honouring sports legends while they are still alive, noting that Onigbinde’s experience and wisdom had been invaluable to the development of Nigerian football.

“Coach Onigbinde represents an era of discipline, courage, and football intelligence,” the statement read. “He has made his mark and leaves behind a legacy for other coaches or would-be coaches to follow. Nigeria will miss his wealth of experience.”

The institute called for prayers for Onigbinde’s soul, asking God Almighty to grant him eternal rest and provide his family with the strength to bear the loss.

“Rest in peace, Coach Adegboye Onigbinde,” the statement concluded, commemorating a life dedicated to the advancement of Nigerian football.
