Bubiade Royal Family Demands Fairness in Selection of New Awujale

The Bubiade Royal Family of Ijebu-Ode has called for fairness and recognition of its customary rights in the ongoing process for the selection of a new Awujale of Ijebuland, insisting that its lineage deserves the opportunity to produce the next monarch.

Addressing journalists at a press conference in Ijebu-Ode, the Olori-Ebi of the family, Olaide Busura, said the appeal was aimed at correcting what he described as a long-standing historical imbalance in the succession process within the royal lineage of the throne.

Busura explained that the Bubiade lineage traces its ancestry to Oba Jadiara, one of the past Awujales of Ijebuland. According to him, Bubiade was the first child of the monarch, while another child, Funsegbuwa, later produced Tunwase, whose descendants have historically produced several Awujales.

He noted that historical records indicate the throne within the Jadiara royal lineage has largely circulated between the descendants of Funsegbuwa and Tunwase, leaving the Bubiade branch without the opportunity to ascend the throne.

Busura listed some past monarchs who emerged from the other branches of the royal family, including Oba Funsegbuwa, Adesimbo Tunwase, Adekoya Eleruja, and Adenuga Folagbade, who became Awujale in 1925.

He stressed that the Bubiade Royal Family was not seeking to disrupt the traditional process but was instead calling for equity and respect for historical lineage in determining the next occupant of the revered throne.

The Awujale stool remains one of the most prominent traditional institutions in Ogun State, and discussions surrounding succession have continued to attract attention from stakeholders across Ijebuland.
