Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a former councillor from Lagos State over alleged involvement in illicit drug trafficking.
The suspect, Sheleru Sadiq Olalekan, a former two-term councillor at the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Council, was apprehended during an intelligence-led operation at his residence in Ilado, Ibeju-Lekki on Monday, March 2, 2026.
According to NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi, a thorough search of the premises led to the recovery of 40 kilograms of skunk, a potent strain of cannabis, from one of the rooms in the house.
The former councillor, who currently works as a legislative aide, admitted ownership of both the seized drugs and the property where they were found during his voluntary statement to investigators. He also confirmed his political background, stating that he had served two terms representing the Orimedu community in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area.
“In his statement, Sheleru admitted ownership of the exhibit and the property where it was recovered. He said he had previously served two terms as a councillor representing Orimedu community in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Council,” the NDLEA statement added.
Investigations into the case are ongoing as the agency seeks to unravel the full scope of the alleged drug trafficking activities.
