2027: Four Tinubu Ministers May Resign to Pursue Electoral Ambitions

As political alignments ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections begin to take shape, indications have emerged that four members of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet may resign their positions to pursue elective offices in their respective states.

Sources within political circles say Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power; Muhammad Ali Pate, Minister of Health and Social Welfare; Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs; and Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, are considering stepping down from the Federal Executive Council to focus on their political ambitions ahead of party primaries.

If the ministers eventually resign, the move could trigger a limited cabinet reshuffle within the administration as preparations intensify for the next electoral cycle.

Political observers believe Adelabu may be preparing for another run at the governorship of Oyo State. The former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria previously contested the state’s governorship election but lost to the incumbent governor, Seyi Makinde, in both the 2019 and 2023 polls. Despite those setbacks, Adelabu has remained active in the state’s political landscape, fueling speculation about a potential comeback in 2027.

In Bauchi State, political watchers say both Pate and Tuggar are being encouraged by supporters to join the governorship race. Reports suggest that consultations and grassroots mobilization by their loyalists have intensified in recent months, strengthening speculation about their possible participation in the contest.

Meanwhile, Onyejeocha is reportedly considering a return to the National Assembly of Nigeria. Prior to her appointment to the federal cabinet, she spent about 16 years in the House of Representatives representing the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency in Abia State.

Under provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, political appointees are required to resign their positions before contesting in party primaries or participating as delegates.

With party primaries expected to take place months ahead of the 2027 elections, the ministers would need to step down from their current roles should they formally declare their political ambitions.
