Akinleye Urges Issue-Based Campaigns, Peaceful Conduct Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Federal Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission in Ogun State, Morakinyo Akinleye, has called on political stakeholders to adopt issue-based campaigns and maintain peaceful conduct as preparations gather momentum for the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued in Abeokuta, Akinleye urged aspirants, candidates, party leaders and supporters across political parties to prioritise peace, dignity and democratic integrity in their political engagements.

Describing Ogun as a beacon of intellectualism and progressive political thought in Nigeria, he noted that the state has consistently demonstrated that politics should be conducted with decorum, substance and respect for the rule of law.

“As we approach another defining electoral season, it is imperative for all stakeholders to recognise their collective responsibility to preserve the peace and stability of our dear Gateway State,” he said.

Akinleye advised candidates to focus their campaigns on concrete policy alternatives and practical solutions, including economic development strategies, youth empowerment, job creation, security, community safety, fiscal responsibility and transparency.

According to him, the electorate deserves campaigns driven by ideas and programmes rather than insults, propaganda or violence.

He cautioned against ethnic and sub-ethnic sentiments, personal attacks, character assassination and misinformation, warning that such actions erode public trust and weaken democratic institutions.

The commissioner further encouraged candidates to articulate clear manifestos, engage in constructive debates and present measurable plans that address the needs and aspirations of the people.

“Violence, intimidation, thuggery, vote-buying and inflammatory conduct undermine not only the electoral process but also the future of our state. Democracy thrives when citizens disagree respectfully and compete peacefully,” he stated.

Akinleye urged all political actors to respect electoral guidelines, reject hate speech, promote tolerance across party lines and uphold the sanctity of the ballot, emphasising that the strength of democracy lies not only in elections themselves but in the character and conduct of those who participate.
