Oyejide Sunkanmi cites performance, grassroots impact and conviction as reasons for dumping PDP to join APC aspirant Solomon Adeola’s campaign.

The immediate past Ogun State Youth Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Oyejide Sunkanmi, has formally declared his support for Ogun West Senator, Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, a leading governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In an opinion statement explaining his decision, Sunkanmi said his alignment with Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, followed careful reflection and assessment of what he described as performance-driven leadership.

According to him, the decision was neither impulsive nor politically transactional, but rooted in conviction and a belief in measurable impact.

“In the last few days, I have received calls, messages, and visits from leaders, friends and associates across Ogun State. The question has been consistent: Why Yayi? And why now?” he stated.

Sunkanmi explained that after meeting with the senator, he found clarity of vision and a practical governance approach rather than mere political rhetoric.

“What I encountered was a leader who understands the weight of responsibility that comes with public office. His vision for Ogun State is grounded in structure, practicality and achievable goals,” he said.

Highlighting projects in his Oke-Ogun community in Abeokuta North Local Government Area, Sunkanmi pointed to infrastructure improvements such as the rehabilitation of the Rounder–Olorunda road and installation of solar lighting as tangible examples of effective representation.

He further cited interventions across various communities, including motorised boreholes, transformers to restore electricity, strategic road projects and empowerment programmes targeting artisans, traders and young entrepreneurs.

“Leadership, to me, is about impact. It is about measurable results that improve daily life. By that standard, Yayi has demonstrated capacity and commitment,” he added.

Sunkanmi acknowledged that leaving his former position after 12 years of political association was not an easy choice, but said leadership demands courage and alignment with principles over comfort.

He described the “West2State” project as a platform focused on inclusive governance, continuity of development and expanding opportunities across all local governments in Ogun State.

“As an Egba man, I see no contradiction in supporting a leader whose work benefits our people and strengthens our collective future. Development should never be partisan. Progress should never be selective,” he stated.

With his defection, the Ogun political landscape appears set for further realignments ahead of the 2027 election cycle, as key actors position themselves for the governorship race.
