Tinubu to Swear in Olatunji Disu as Substantive IGP Following NPC Endorsement

President Bola Tinubu is set to swear in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police on Wednesday, following his unanimous endorsement by the Nigeria Police Council.

The swearing-in ceremony will take place during the meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), as announced by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The NPC’s endorsement was reached at its meeting in Abuja, presided over by President Tinubu and attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima alongside key security and governance officials. Present at the meeting were the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu; Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume; National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam; FCT Minister Nyesom Wike; and Head of Service Esther Walson-Jack.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State commended Disu’s appointment, highlighting his track record in crime control, particularly during his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021.

Similar endorsements came from Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule and the FCT Minister, who praised Disu’s professionalism and operational efficiency in previous postings.

Disu’s confirmation follows his brief period as Acting IGP after the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun. At 59, Disu brings extensive policing and administrative experience, having joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.

His qualifications span public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, and security studies, credentials the Presidency has cited as evidence of his suitability for knowledge-driven, modern policing.

Prior to his elevation, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force CID Annex in Lagos. He also previously served under President Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos State Governor from 1999 to 2007, where he worked as Aide-de-Camp to the governor.

The endorsement by the NPC and forthcoming swearing-in mark the final step in consolidating leadership at the Nigeria Police Force, with authorities expressing optimism that Disu’s appointment will strengthen operational efficiency and strategic crime prevention nationwide.
