Lagos Has No Pension Arrears, Sanwo-Olu Reaffirms Commitment to Retirees’ Welfare

The Lagos State Government has reiterated that it currently has no outstanding pension liabilities, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu affirming that his administration remains committed to the welfare and dignity of retirees.

The disclosure came during a courtesy visit by the senior management team of the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD), led by its Executive Secretary, Tolulope Odunaiya, at Lagos House, Marina.

Sanwo-Olu stated that pensioners, who dedicated significant years of service to government, deserve respect and timely access to their benefits. He emphasised that Lagos State has cleared all pension-related liabilities under the contributory scheme, asserting that no pensioner is owed arrears.

“In the last three years, we have cleared everything that is a liability on our pension. There is no pensioner that would say we owe three years’ money,” the governor said, adding that retirees with complete documentation begin receiving their benefits within two to three months of exiting service.

He underscored his administration’s policy of fairness and dignity for pensioners, noting that the government recognises their contributions to public service and is determined to ensure a seamless transition into retirement.

Sanwo-Olu further pledged continued collaboration with PTAD to enhance the welfare of the nearly 200,000 pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme nationwide, many of whom reside in Lagos.

Earlier, Odunaiya highlighted PTAD’s efforts to strengthen partnerships with state governments in improving pension administration and social protection for retirees. She noted that the reforms approved in August 2025 under the guidance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu aim to deepen pension system efficiency and enhance benefits for senior citizens.

According to PTAD, the objective is to ensure retirees receive their entitlements with fairness and dignity, reflecting the government’s broader commitment to social protection.

The Lagos State Government’s declaration of a pension arrears-free status signals progress in public financial management and reinforces confidence in the contributory pension framework, which seeks to guarantee sustainable retirement benefits for civil servants.

With continued reforms and stakeholder engagement, both Lagos State and PTAD say they aim to strengthen pension governance and improve outcomes for Nigeria’s growing population of retirees.
