The Department of State Services has arrested a suspect, Udeme Sunday Stephen, in connection with the recent attack on the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and some leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin City, Edo State.
The attack reportedly occurred at the residence of ADC chieftain John Odigie-Oyegun shortly after Obi and party leaders returned from the ADC secretariat, where former Labour Party governorship candidate in Edo State, Olumide Akpata, formally joined the ADC.
Following the incident, the suspect allegedly took to social media, claiming responsibility and issuing further threats against Obi, including warnings of another potential attack during a proposed visit to Rivers State. The post drew immediate attention, prompting security agencies to launch an investigation.
According to sources within the DSS, operatives deployed forensic analysis and covert intelligence operations to trace the threat. The investigation allegedly linked the posts to Stephen, a 26-year-old teacher at Jessica High School in Eliozu, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area.
DSS operatives subsequently arrested the suspect, who remains in custody and is expected to face charges in court. The agency has not disclosed further details but reiterated its commitment to preventing acts of political violence and ensuring national security.
The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, earlier confirmed the attack on Obi and ADC members, describing it as an unfortunate incident. Security agencies continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault and the online threats that followed.
The development underscores heightened political tensions in the build-up to future electoral activities, with authorities urging restraint and adherence to the rule of law.
