The Accord Party in Osun State has recorded a major political gain as six members of the House of Representatives formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to its platform ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
The lawmakers made their declaration during a stakeholders’ meeting in Osogbo, a gathering attended by party leaders, supporters and key government officials. The move marks a significant reshaping of Osun’s federal political alignment and strengthens the Accord Party’s legislative base in the state.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Clement Akanni, who represents Boluwaduro/Ifedayo/Ila Federal Constituency, confirmed that the decision to leave the PDP takes immediate effect.
Other lawmakers who joined him include Mahruf Adewale (Osogbo/Olorunda/Orolu/Irepodun), Bamidele Salam (Ede North/Ede South/Egbedore/Ejigbo), Soji Adetunji (Ikirun/Boripe/Odo-Otin), Mudashiru Lukman Alani (Iwo/Ayedire/Boluwaduro) and Lanre Oladebo (Ayedaade/Irewole/Isokan).
Akanni urged supporters to remain vigilant during the forthcoming governorship poll, advising them to verify electoral materials before voting and to monitor proceedings at polling units after casting their ballots.
Governor Ademola Adeleke, who had earlier defected to the Accord Party in December 2025 and secured its governorship ticket, told supporters that internal challenges within the PDP influenced his decision to exit the party.
“I love PDP but I had to leave to avoid being trapped in my re-election bid,” Adeleke stated, adding that consultations and deliberations guided his move to the Accord platform.
Also present at the event was former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Lasun Yusuf, who called on party faithful to remain united and focused ahead of the election.
The development leaves Lere Oyewumi, representing Osun West Senatorial District, as the only federal lawmaker from the state still elected on the PDP platform.
The political landscape in Osun has witnessed heightened activity in recent weeks. On February 14, 2026, the All Progressives Congress (APC) also welcomed two senators and three House of Representatives members into its fold, further intensifying competition ahead of the governorship contest.
With multiple defections reshaping party structures, Osun’s political terrain is entering a high-stakes phase, where legislative loyalty and grassroots mobilisation could prove decisive in determining the outcome of the August poll.
