Atiku’s Son Resigns as Adamawa Works Commissioner, Declines to Join APC Defection

Adamu Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has resigned from his position as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State, effective March 2, 2026.

In a resignation letter addressed to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, Adamu stated that his decision followed “deep personal reflection and careful consideration.” He described his tenure as a privilege and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to contribute to the infrastructural development of the state.

“It has been a rare honour and privilege to serve under your visionary leadership,” he wrote, thanking the governor for the trust and support that enabled him to discharge his duties with commitment. He also conveyed gratitude to the people of Adamawa State for their prayers and backing during his time in office.

Adamu concluded his letter with prayers for the governor’s continued guidance and strength in leading the state.

His resignation comes against the backdrop of recent political realignments in the state. He had notably declined to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and was absent when 22 commissioners accompanied Governor Fintiri in announcing their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC on February 27, 2026.

While no explicit political motive was stated in his resignation letter, the timing has inevitably fueled speculation about broader dynamics within Adamawa’s political landscape. For now, Adamu’s departure marks a significant shift in the state’s executive council at a moment of evolving party alignments.
