Babajide Sanwo-Olu is set to formally receive Lagos-based student-athletes who delivered a standout performance at the World School Games Olympia held in Doha, Qatar, from January 29 to 31, 2026.
The athletes, drawn from leading Lagos schools, competed in athletics, football and swimming across the U-11, U-13 and U-15 categories, recording an impressive medal haul and finishing strongly on overall leaderboards.
At the global meet, St Saviour’s School emerged first overall in the U-11 category, while Grange School secured second overall in U-13 and third overall in U-15 — a performance that positioned Lagos schools prominently on the international stage.
Other participating institutions included Riverbank School, British International School, Lagos Preparatory & Secondary School and Corona School, whose athletes competed across multiple disciplines.
Several of the standout performers also went on to represent Nigeria at the African Youth Games in Angola last year, having begun their competitive journey at the National Youth Games where they contributed to Lagos State’s top-of-the-table finish.
Governor Sanwo-Olu described the accomplishments as a defining moment for the state’s sports ecosystem, attributing the success to discipline, structured development and collective support from parents, coaches and educators.
“This reflects the steady revitalisation of the school sports ecosystem in Lagos,” he noted, underscoring the administration’s commitment to youth development through sports infrastructure and talent nurturing.
The Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, characterised the performance as a landmark achievement for school and youth sports. He described it as proof that when talent aligns with structure and vision, global excellence becomes attainable.
Beyond medals, the reception signals Lagos State’s broader strategy: build from the grassroots, institutionalise school sports, and create a sustainable pipeline from local competitions to international podiums.
