Ogun Planning Commissioner Urges Strict Enforcement of Development Laws to Curb Uncoordinated Construction

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Olatunji Odunlami, has directed Zonal Town Planning Officers to intensify enforcement of development regulations and prevent haphazard construction across the state.

He issued the directive during an official tour of planning offices in Oke Odan, Ado-Odo, Igbesa and Ota, emphasising the government’s commitment to orderly urban development and improved service delivery. Odunlami stressed that professionalism and strict adherence to planning laws remain essential to reducing illegal structures and uncoordinated settlements.

“You need to understand your terrain. Organise formal meetings with traditional rulers, community leaders and development associations to highlight the importance of proper planning and documentation,” he advised officers.

During an interactive session, staff members raised concerns about manpower shortages and logistical constraints that, according to them, hinder operational efficiency. The commissioner assured them that the ministry would review the issues and provide necessary support to enhance productivity.

Permanent Secretary Sakirudeen Salaam noted that the tour aligns with broader plans for capacity building, digital transformation and stronger monitoring systems within zonal offices. He said these initiatives aim to foster sustainable urban development and improve living conditions for residents.

Representing the Zonal Town Planning Officers, TPL Matthew Fatunbi commended the visit, describing it as a positive step toward strengthening coordination between the ministry and grassroots planning structures.

Authorities maintain that effective planning enforcement is crucial for managing rapid urban growth and ensuring that development across Ogun State remains structured, safe and compliant with regulatory standards.
