Ogun State’s youth leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, Oyejide Sunkanmi, popularly known as SUCO, has officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress, marking a notable political shift within the state’s opposition ranks.
Sunkanmi tendered his resignation in a letter addressed to PDP state chairman Abayomi Tella, expressing gratitude for the party’s role in shaping his political career over the past 12 years. In the letter, he acknowledged the leadership support he received from prominent party figures, including Oladipupo Adebutu, describing his time in the PDP as both fulfilling and transformative.
“It has been a remarkable and fulfilling 12-year journey. I am sincerely grateful to the leadership of the party for the opportunity to serve in various capacities. The experience has shaped me politically and personally,” he wrote, stressing that the decision was not taken lightly and might disappoint some supporters.
He appealed for understanding, noting that political realignments are sometimes necessary for personal and professional growth. While the letter did not elaborate on specific reasons for his departure, Sunkanmi later confirmed that the move to the APC was based on “personal grounds.”
The defection adds to a growing trend of political realignments within Ogun State, where party loyalty has increasingly been tested by shifting political calculations and strategic positioning ahead of future elections.
APC officials are expected to formally receive Sunkanmi into the party structure, viewing his youth leadership experience as a potential asset in mobilising grassroots support and strengthening the party’s engagement with younger voters.
For the PDP, the exit of a prominent youth figure underscores ongoing internal challenges and the need to retain young leaders within its fold to remain competitive in the state’s evolving political landscape.
