President Bola Tinubu has appointed seasoned police administrator Tunji Disu as the new Inspector-General of Police, elevating a career officer with more than three decades of service and extensive experience in frontline security operations.
Disu’s policing career spans leadership roles across major security formations and operational commands. He previously headed the Lagos Rapid Response Squad (RRS), a unit widely credited with improving street-level policing and rapid crime response in Lagos. His tenure in the RRS earned recognition for tactical policing reforms and improved operational efficiency.
Beyond Lagos, Disu served as Commissioner of Police in both Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), handling complex security environments and coordinating law enforcement operations in high-stakes jurisdictions.
Prior to his appointment as IGP, he led the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force, a unit responsible for intelligence-led operations and counter-crime strategies. His background emphasises operational policing and intelligence work rather than administrative or purely bureaucratic assignments.
Supporters of the appointment argue that Disu’s career trajectory reflects hands-on experience and institutional knowledge, qualities considered vital for security leadership. His rise through the ranks — from field operations to elite intelligence units — underscores a policing background rooted in operational expertise.
The transition comes at a time when security challenges and institutional reforms remain central issues. Disu’s appointment signals continuity in professional policing while raising expectations about reforms and operational effectiveness under new leadership.
Authorities are expected to provide further details on the handover process and policy direction of the new police leadership in the coming days.
