President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly removed Kayode Egbetokun from office as Inspector-General of Police, according to senior police sources and officials within the Police Service Commission.
Sources confirmed that Egbetokun was directed to prepare handover notes following a meeting at the Presidential Villa, a development interpreted as a directive to step aside. He is expected to hand over to Tunji Disu, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police overseeing the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos.
While official confirmation from the Presidency is still awaited, reports suggest the decision stems from ongoing controversies surrounding Egbetokun’s tenure and concerns about his health. Some sources alleged that the President urged him to focus on medical treatment, citing kidney-related health issues — claims that remain unverified.
Egbetokun’s time in office attracted criticism over allegations of institutional impropriety and debates about the legality of his extended tenure beyond standard retirement rules. Supporters defended his leadership, while critics argued that structural reforms were needed to strengthen accountability within the police force.
Reports also indicated that some police officers celebrated news of his removal, reflecting divided opinions within the institution. One source claimed that First Lady Oluremi Tinubu had advocated for Egbetokun to remain in office, though the President reportedly insisted on leadership change.
If confirmed, the appointment of Disu would mark a significant transition in Nigeria’s security leadership. Disu is known for his experience in criminal investigations and policing administration, raising expectations about the direction of reforms under new leadership.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, and further updates are expected as the transition process unfolds.
