Bayelsa State House of Assembly Confirms Peter Akpe as New Deputy Governor

The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has formally confirmed Peter Akpe as the new Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, following his nomination by Governor Douye Diri after the passing of former Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo in December 2025.

Akpe’s confirmation marks a significant political development in the state. He previously served as Chief of Staff at Government House, Yenagoa and has an extensive background in public administration and politics. A former two-term member of the state House of Assembly, he rose through the civil service to the rank of Director before holding senior political roles, including Deputy Chief of Staff and Acting Chief of Staff.

A holder of a PhD and a Christian minister, Akpe brings both administrative experience and academic credentials to the office of Deputy Governor. His appointment is expected to provide continuity in governance following the sudden vacancy created by the death of Ewhrudjakpo.

The late deputy governor’s death in December 2025 shocked the state. He collapsed while heading to a scheduled meeting and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, where he was pronounced dead. In response, Governor Diri declared three days of mourning, ordered flags to be flown at half-mast, and described the loss as a major blow to the government and people of Bayelsa. Authorities have since ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Condolences poured in from across political and social circles. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described Ewhrudjakpo as a politician of principle and conviction, praising his integrity and dedication to public service.

With Akpe’s confirmation complete, attention now shifts to how the new Deputy Governor will support Governor Diri’s administration and contribute to governance in Bayelsa State. The appointment underscores the state’s commitment to continuity and stability in leadership following a period of political transition.
