Stakeholders Hail Electoral Reforms as Grassroots Democracy Gains Momentum in Yewa North Local Government Area

Stakeholders in Yewa North Local Government Area have commended the electoral reforms championed by the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the amended Electoral Act as a significant step toward strengthening internal party democracy and enhancing transparency in Nigeria’s political system.

The praise came during the All Progressives Congress (APC) local government congress held in Ayetoro, where the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Isiaq Salako, highlighted the reforms as a milestone in deepening democratic participation at the grassroots. According to him, the amended law abolishes the indirect delegate system and allows political parties to adopt either direct primaries—where all registered members vote—or a consensus arrangement.

Salako noted that the changes are designed to reduce undue influence in candidate selection and strengthen accountability within political parties, thereby empowering ordinary members to play a direct role in decision-making processes.

Prominent party elders also lauded the reform. Suraj Adekunbi, a former Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, observed that removing the delegate system would curb manipulation and candidate imposition. He stressed that broader participation at the grassroots would enhance credibility and inclusiveness in the political process.

Similarly, Folashade Ogunola, the APC Women Leader, welcomed the development, stating that it would encourage greater involvement of women and youth in party activities and governance.

The Commissioner for Housing, Jagunmolu Jamiu Omoniyi, and the Chairman of Yewa North Local Government, Olusola Akinbode, also expressed support for the reforms. They argued that strengthening grassroots participation would reduce political godfatherism and foster a more inclusive democratic culture.

While applauding the electoral changes, stakeholders also acknowledged the infrastructure drive of Governor Dapo Abiodun, noting that road construction and rehabilitation projects across rural communities have improved mobility and economic activity. They described the initiatives as evidence of responsive governance and balanced development aimed at enhancing the welfare of residents.

According to the stakeholders, the combination of electoral reforms and infrastructure development represents a positive trajectory for democratic consolidation and socio-economic growth in Ogun State.

As political actors prepare for future elections under the new framework, attention now shifts to how effectively the reforms will strengthen internal democracy, reduce electoral disputes, and foster greater citizen participation in governance.
