Ogun Govt Denies Endorsing Prince Kuye as Awujale, Halts Selection Process Amid Petitions

The Ogun State Government has firmly denied reports alleging that it endorsed Prince Ademorin Aliu Kuye as the next Awujale of Ijebuland, describing the claims as false and misleading.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the government dismissed rumours suggesting that the Ifa oracle had selected Prince Kuye and that the state had adopted or supported such an outcome. The government clarified that it is not involved in, nor has it approved, any candidate in the ongoing succession process.

According to the statement, the selection and installation of the Awujale are strictly governed by established laws, recognised traditional customs, and laid-down procedures. Any claim that the state has endorsed a candidate through an oracle or informal channel was categorically rejected.

The government further disclosed that the process to fill the vacant stool has been temporarily halted following multiple complaints and petitions regarding the selection procedure. The suspension, it explained, is intended to allow for a comprehensive review to ensure transparency, legality, and broad acceptability among stakeholders.

The revered Awujale stool became vacant in July 2025 following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who passed away at the age of 91 after a 65-year reign. Since then, the succession process has faced repeated interruptions.

In January, the state government suspended the exercise for the second time in less than a month, citing the need to maintain public order and protect the integrity and prestige of the throne. Earlier, on December 18, 2025, the process was halted over procedural errors that officials warned could trigger litigation.

The Fusengbuwa Ruling House had earlier shortlisted 95 contestants—94 princes and one princess—during a nomination meeting held in Ijebu Ode.

Authorities have urged residents and stakeholders to rely solely on official communications and avoid spreading unverified information capable of creating tension. The government reiterated its commitment to upholding due process, preserving traditional institutions, and ensuring peace across the state.
