Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr. Tunde Lemo, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State, positioning himself as a grassroots-focused contender within the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Lemo made his declaration on Wednesday while participating in the party’s ward congress at Ward 12, Ita-Agemo, Isale-Igbein in Abeokuta, using the platform to signal both political ambition and party loyalty.
Framing his aspiration around development and governance, Lemo said his decision was anchored on the need to accelerate growth at the grassroots level. He emphasised Ogun State’s vast agricultural potential, arguing that with the right leadership and strategic coordination, the sector could be transformed into a major economic driver for the state.
He reassured party faithful of his commitment to inclusiveness and unity, describing the APC as an “organic party” built on loyalty and shared vision. Highlighting the peaceful conduct of the ward congress, Lemo pointed to the absence of internal conflict as evidence of party cohesion and strength.
In his remarks, he aligned himself with the broader national agenda of President Bola Tinubu, citing ongoing reforms and a transformative governance approach as energising party members across the country. He noted that the ward congresses represent a foundational step in strengthening party structures ahead of future contests, culminating in the national congress.
Lemo also commended Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for key infrastructural strides, particularly the development of the Agro-Cargo Airport, which has secured approval to commence commercial operations. He described such initiatives as strategic assets capable of unlocking economic opportunities for farmers, exporters, and investors.
On his 2027 ambition, Lemo acknowledged that the journey is just beginning but maintained confidence in his governance philosophy. He framed his aspiration not merely as a political pursuit but as a mission to “raise the bar” and deliver measurable impact for Ogun residents.
With the declaration, the early contours of the 2027 Ogun governorship race are beginning to take shape, as aspirants within the APC quietly position themselves for what is expected to be a competitive primary season.
