Ogun State Government Warns Against Street Trading Following Fatal Ota Accident

The Ogun State Government has cautioned residents against indiscriminate roadside trading, following a tragic accident at the Toll Gate area of Ota in Ado-Odo/Ota LGA, which claimed lives and destroyed property.

The State Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, who assessed the scene at the Governor’s instance, emphasized that street trading is a dangerous practice that exposes traders and commuters to avoidable accidents. She reminded citizens that the government has provided designated market stalls to facilitate safe commercial activities.

“We know accidents can happen, but we must adopt practices that reduce risks. We have called on our people to stop street trading for their safety,” she stated. Engr. Salako-Oyedele expressed personal pain at the incident, particularly as it occurred in her home area, and extended the condolences of the state government to affected families. She assured that survivors would receive support while preventive measures are being strengthened.

The Olota of Ota, HRM Oba (Prof.) Abdulkabir Obalanlege, condemned roadside trading, noting that the loss of lives could have been prevented had residents complied with previous warnings. He prayed for the repose of the deceased and comfort for their families.

The Deputy Governor also acknowledged the swift response of the Local Government Council, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), TRACE, and road unions in managing the emergency.
