gun Government Shuts Down Illegal Nursing Institution in Ifo

The Ogun State Government has sealed an unaccredited nursing institution operating in Ifo, following a joint monitoring exercise by the State Nursing and Midwifery Committee and the Ministry of Health.

The facility, known as “Universal Public Health Science,” was found running Community Health, Public Health, and Nursing programmes without accreditation from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, the statutory body responsible for regulating nursing education nationwide.

Speaking on the operation, Dr. Serifat Omobolanle Aminu, Chairman of the State Nursing and Midwifery Committee and Acting Director of Nursing Services at the Ministry of Health, said the shutdown followed alerts from both a government X post and a whistleblower email. “The owner, Mr. Elugbadebo Damilola Peter, did not deny running the programmes, but there is no accreditation from the Council, and the Ministry of Health has no record of approval,” she stated.

The monitoring team described the facility as grossly inadequate for health education. The administrative block was a three-bedroom flat, while lecture areas resembled small shop-like structures with old wooden benches. Dr. Aminu warned that training future healthcare professionals under such conditions jeopardizes public health and wastes students’ time and resources.

She urged the public, especially parents and prospective students, to verify the accreditation status of health training institutions with the Ministry of Health and the Nursing and Midwifery Council before enrollment.

While acknowledging that individuals may establish educational institutions, Dr. Aminu emphasized the importance of following due process to secure accreditation and produce competent healthcare professionals, underscoring the state’s commitment to safeguarding quality health education.
